Nanotechnology Industry Makes Very Small Storage Devices

Nanotechnology is a highly specialized engineering concept that devises processes to make very small storage devices with huge memory capacity. The technology has become increasingly important across the globe and has pioneered advanced developments in a number of industries.

The Governments of a number of developed and developing nations such as the USA, UK and Germany have started funding nanotechnology projects in order to enhance the economic conditions across industries. AT present Germany is the leader in the technology and has an edge over all other countries both in terms of research in the subject as well as its applications in various industries.

Nanotechnology industry as such is also known as molecular industry or Molecular Manufacturing industry. By definition nanotechnology is the manufacture of various devices whose dimensions are measured in nanometers. One nanometer is a millionth of a millimeter. Even a human hair has a diameter about fifty thousand times more than a nanometer!

The nanotechnology industry is creating great interest among computer engineers as it is all about very high-density microprocessor chips. In this industry the belief is that every bit of data can be stored in one single atom. This also means that a byte or an array of words can also be stored in an atom.

Apart from the computer engineering industry, nanotechnology is also of great benefit to the medical, aerospace and defense industries.

The nanotechnology industry does what is called nanofabrication that refers to the actual designing part. In any device or material, every atom is removed unless the total structure is completely altered a desired or planned. Another method is to assemble the desired chip by putting together one atom at a time.

A number of recent innovations showcase the immense advancements that have been made possible by nanotechnology. For instance one can look at the products recently launched such as transparent sun blocks, specially designed golf balls that fly straight, trims in hummers, fabrics that are stain proof etc that clearly demonstrate the amazing use of nanotechnology in a number of fields.

Apart from the industries and developments mentioned above, there are a number of other areas where the technology is being used and the end result is probably just a few months away. Therefore the nanotechnology industry as such is in a, what can be called, growth phase. This has on the grim side, given rise to a number of challenges.

Sourcing funds for the research in the nanotechnology industry has been a major challenge across the globe. As the technology itself is in a nascent stage, not much awareness exists in the consumer market regarding the benefits. Also, not many products ply in the market that speaks of the wonders nanotechnology can create. This has been a major deterrent in getting the desired funds as companies cannot allot money from their revenue for research in this field. Therefore the important challenge must be to convince the interested parties to realize that the benefits from the research are worth the investment made.
